DESCRIPTION
This partner project focused on creating a better user experience for a company's terms of use document through typographic and design choices.
When
Fall 2022
Who
Katherine Ryan - prototyping and testing
Ashley Willis - brand and content
Working with a partner we were tasked to redesign the terms and conditions of a mobile app or website. The primary goals of this redesign were to make the text more readable and engaging to encourage user interaction. Many people simply check off the agree to terms box when making online accounts without ever reading them. This is in large part due to the complexity and difficulty of reading one of these documents. Our remade Instagram Terms and Conditions provide a better experience for the viewers and results in a better chance of them actually reading the document.

Our primary efforts were put into analyzing what was already there. The Instagram Terms and Conditions as of Fall of 2022 is a plain text document with links and no other interaction or functions. We analyzed how that document can be read through and marked key issues of things that needed to be changed.

At the end of our project, to test the success of our redesign, we conducted user testing. For this we created a list of tasks we asked participants to perform, each of which tested a different intended function of our product. It was rewarding to see a significant positive response from these participants when using using our redesign compared to the original text.
Video Overview of Project

Solutions Overview:

Text is too dense
solution - break it into manageable sections with a number and letter system to understand which sections are related to one another.

Text is very long
solution - section the text and present it in a less overwhelming format similar to the style of an Instagram scrolling feed.

No way to navigate
solution - added two different read modes. One is for reading full sections and the other is for quick skimming. These can be toggled from the toolbar or using the read more drop downs in condensed view.solution - added a table of contents that is navigable from the toolbar at the bottom.

Hard to understand terminology
solution - Added highlighted definitions and a glossary. The user can save terms they dont understand to the glossary to quickly access their meanings wherever they are in the text.

Lack of customization
solution - The user can highlight and annotate sections of the document. This helps with remembering information and being able to find it again the next time they are looking for it.

Boring to look at
solution - added lively typographic hierarchy that helps with visual interest and ease of reading. There is also a color gradient that slowly transitions through the document helping the reader visualize their progress.
